Exposed-Fastener Panels
PBR Panel for Dallas Barns, Barndominiums and Metal Buildings
The PBR panel is the 36-inch ribbed sheet on most barns, barndominiums and shop roofs around Dallas. What sets it apart is the purlin bearing leg, an extended flat on the underlap edge that supports the overlapping rib at every purlin. It is our default pick for PBR metal roofing on open-framed buildings.

PBR Panel Specifications
PBR combines wide coverage with a reinforced side lap. Expect these common industry numbers; the exact profile, gauge and screw schedule for your building appear on the shop drawing.
| Specification | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Net coverage | About 36 in. |
| Major ribs | About 1-1/4 in. tall, 12 in. on center |
| Rib shape | Trapezoidal major ribs with low stiffening ribs in the flats |
| Side lap | Purlin bearing leg under each overlapping rib |
| Gauges and materials | Typically 26 gauge; 24 gauge for more dent resistance |
| Finishes | SMP and PVDF (Kynar 500) colors; bare Galvalume |
| Fasteners | Self-drilling face screws with washers at purlins; stitch screws along side laps |
| Minimum roof slope | Many makers list 1:12; a few accept 1/2:12 when laps are sealed |
| Roof or wall use | Both |
| Best for | Barns, barndominiums, shops, carports, agricultural and metal buildings |
PBR is not yet covered by a PMRS spec sheet. The manufacturer’s data and load tables come with your quote, so purlin spacing is checked before anything ships.
What Is the Purlin Bearing Leg, and Why Does It Matter?
The bearing leg is the reason PBR exists. It turns a weak, unsupported side lap into a joint that rests on solid framing.

On a plain R panel, the overlapping rib rests on a narrow edge with nothing under it. PBR extends that underlap edge into a flat leg that sits on the purlin.
Three things improve. The lap screw clamps steel to steel over the purlin. The rib is less likely to crush when someone walks the roof. And the joint stays tighter under wind uplift.
That is the short answer to R panel vs PBR: the same look from the street, with a stronger side lap on PBR. For roofs, we recommend PBR.
How Does PBR Compare With Its Siblings?
PBR sits in the middle of the family: stronger than corrugated, lighter-looking than 7.2 rib. Here is how it stacks up.
- RPBR mirrors PBR, moving the bearing leg to the other edge for layouts that start from the far end.
- 7.2 rib has taller, closer ribs for longer spans and heavier loads.
- Corrugated panels give a softer, traditional wave for porches and wainscot.
- Standing seam hides its fasteners and floats on clips, which suits a primary home better.
Where Do Dallas Owners Use PBR Metal Roofing?
Anywhere a building needs an economical roof that spans open framing. These are the PBR jobs we see most around Dallas-Fort Worth.
- Barndominiums, with PBR on the roof and walls and a contrasting wainscot.
- Shops, garages and RV covers on acreage lots east of Dallas.
- Horse barns, hay barns and loafing sheds.
- Carports and open steel pavilions.
- Pre-engineered metal buildings and small commercial warehouses.
- Re-roofing tired R-panel or PBR buildings with a better side lap.

Spring storms are the real test here. Choose 24 gauge if your site sees frequent hail, since it is roughly 28 percent thicker than 26 gauge and dents less. Chasing a premium discount? Request the UL 2218 listing that matches your panel and gauge, since credits vary from carrier to carrier.
PBR Installation Notes and Upkeep
Good PBR roofs come down to purlin alignment and fastener discipline. We check purlins for plane and spacing first, because the bearing leg only works when it lands on framing.
- Panels are laid so side laps face away from the prevailing wind.
- A screw passes through the overlapping rib and bearing leg into each purlin, and stitch screws close the lap between purlins where specified.
- End laps get butyl tape and always fall over a purlin.
- Inside and outside closures matched to PBR seal the eaves and ridges.
- On bare purlins, a faced blanket under the steel keeps humid-morning condensation from raining inside.
Be clear-eyed about upkeep. A PBR roof has hundreds of exposed screws, and Texas UV plus daily heat cycles age their washers. Plan a yearly check and expect some fastener replacement after roughly 10 to 15 years.
On cost, PBR is often the most economical metal roof we install. As a yardstick, a PMRS standing seam roof on a house is priced near $15 a square foot installed right now, and a PBR shop roof usually costs less. See the metal roof cost guide for what drives price.
PBR Panel Questions
What is the difference between R panel and PBR?
From the street they look alike: 36 inches of coverage and square ribs a foot apart. Underneath, R panel ends at a narrow edge, while PBR carries a flat leg that bears on the purlin. That leg gives the lap screw solid steel to clamp, so PBR laps stay tighter.
What gauge PBR panel should I use in Dallas?
26 gauge is the common choice for barns and shops. 24 gauge is roughly 28 percent thicker and resists hail dents better, so it is worth considering on barndominiums, homes and buildings in hail-prone spots.
What is the minimum slope for a PBR roof?
Many manufacturers publish 1:12, and some allow 1/2:12 when side and end laps are sealed. We follow the data for your exact panel. Roofs flatter than that need a mechanically seamed standing seam system.
How long does a PBR metal roof last?
The coated steel can serve for decades. Screws are the maintenance item: their washers stiffen under Texas UV, so plan a re-screw review somewhere around the 10 to 15 year mark. Yearly checks catch problems while they are cheap.
Can PBR go over a solid roof deck?
Yes. Over a deck, we install a high-temperature underlayment and fasten into the deck or into purlins laid over it. On open framing, the bearing leg sits right on the purlins, and a faced blanket handles condensation.
