Snap lock: 1.75-inch MD

1.75-Inch Snap Lock Metal Panel for Solid Decks and Open Framing

The 1.75-inch snap lock metal panel is the structural member of our snap lock family, and the PMRS sheet names it our most popular system. It adds spanning and uplift capacity and a factory sealant bead in the seam. It can also go over open framing as well as a solid deck.

What makes the 1.75-inch different from the 1-inch and 1.5-inch?

Structure. The sheet calls it a structural and architectural system. It keeps the clean look of an architectural panel while adding the spanning and uplift capacity of a structural one.

Three details set it apart in the field. It is the only size in our snap lock standing seam line listed for open framing. Its seam arrives with a sealant bead applied during forming. And a snap-on batten is available when a design wants a bolder seam line.

The tradeoffs are small. Widths top out at 18″ instead of 20″, and the taller rib reads bolder than the 1″ snap lock. If roof-to-wall transitions drive the design, the 1.5″ snap lock is the closer match.

When is the 1.75-inch snap lock the right call?

Pick it when a pitched roof needs extra strength, or when there is no solid deck to fasten to.

  • Whole-house roofs pitched 3/12 or more, where you want a stout seam without seaming costs
  • Pavilions, carports and covered walkways built on open framing
  • Commercial and light industrial roofs with moderate uplift requirements
  • Projects that will be air- and water-tested, using the specified seam sealant

Below 3/12, or where uplift is severe, move to mechanical lock standing seam. Our 2″ mechanical lock also spans open framing and goes down to 1/2:12.

How do we install it over decks and open framing?

The type of support changes the job, so we settle it before anything is formed.

  • Over a solid deck: high-temperature underlayment, self-adhered membrane at eaves and valleys, then clips fastened into the deck
  • Over open framing: clips fastened to the purlins or framing members at the spacing the engineering specifies
  • Seam sealant applied wherever the project calls for air and water testing
  • Eave, rake and ridge trim and closures bent to fit the 1.75″ profile

Why does the 1.75-inch suit DFW roofs?

It answers the region’s two big roof stresses without the cost of seaming. The taller structural seam resists wind better than our lower snap locks, and 24-gauge steel resists hail better than 26-gauge. For insurance credits, ask about UL 2218 Class 4 rated assemblies on our Class 4 metal roofing page.

On a house, installed cost begins at $15 per square foot in 24-gauge Galvalume with a Kynar 500 finish. Open-framed structures are quoted from drawings. Choose a finish from our metal roof color chart.

1.75-inch snap lock questions

Why is the 1.75-inch snap lock your most popular system?

It covers the most jobs with one panel. It works on houses and commercial roofs, over decks or open framing, in steel or aluminum, at a lower installed cost than a seamed panel.

What does the factory sealant bead do?

The bead is applied in the seam as the panel is formed, so the joint is sealed when it snaps closed. When a project specifies air and water tests, the PMRS sheet requires seam sealant.

Can I use the 1.75-inch snap lock on a carport or pavilion?

Yes, as long as the roof is pitched at 3/12 or steeper. It is the snap lock size listed for open framing, so it can span between purlins without a solid deck.

What is the optional snap-on batten?

It is a separate cap that snaps over the seam for a wider, bolder rib. Ask for it when a design calls for a heavier seam line.
