DECRA Shake XD Roofing for DFW Homes

DECRA Shake XD is the heavy, hand-split version of DECRA’s shake. Its thick butt edges cast deep shadow lines, and it fastens straight to the roof deck with no battens. Permanent Metal Roofing Systems installs Shake XD across Dallas-Fort Worth.

How is Shake XD different from DECRA Shake?

Shake XD trades the sawn look of DECRA Shake for a rough, hand-split one. The bigger change is underneath: XD panels fasten directly to the deck instead of riding on battens.

  • Texture: chunkier edges and deeper grooves imitate thick, split cedar. Standard Shake reads closer to a sawn shake.
  • Attachment: XD is direct to deck under ICC-ES report ESR-1754. Shake sits on battens under ESR-2901.
  • Eave height: with no batten layer, the finished roof sits lower. Fascia and gutter lines usually change less on a re-roof.
  • Panel size: XD panels are slightly smaller, at 14-1/8 by 52-1/8 inches.

The deep texture throws strong shadows, so a color can look darker on the roof than on a flat chip. Judge it on a sample outdoors, and compare finishes on our color chart.

Where does Shake XD make sense in Dallas-Fort Worth?

Shake XD earns its place on homes where the roof is a big part of the view. Steep, broad roofs on larger lots show off the heavy texture best.

It also helps on re-roofs with tight details. Skipping battens keeps the roof plane close to its old height, so drip edges, gutters and siding transitions are easier to match.

Hail is the other reason. Texas has topped the country in major hail events for 11 years running, per NICB and Verisk. DECRA rates Shake XD UL 2218 Class 4, and our Class 4 roofing guide explains what that rating does and does not cover.

For HOAs, a rustic shake profile can satisfy Texas Property Code 202.011 where the neighborhood look is wood shake. Your architectural committee still reviews it, and we help prepare the package.

How do we install Shake XD direct to deck?

We follow DECRA’s direct-to-deck instructions for Shake XD. With no battens to bridge low spots, deck preparation carries more weight than on a batten install.

  1. Strip the old roof and walk the deck for soft, delaminated or uneven sheathing.
  2. Replace or flatten problem areas so each course lies true.
  3. Install a high-temperature underlayment suited to metal, with self-adhered membrane at valleys, eaves and penetrations.
  4. Set the starter and fasten each panel to the deck following DECRA’s fastening schedule.
  5. Close hips, ridges and rakes with DECRA’s stone-coated trim, and flash walls and chimneys with metal formed in our shop where DECRA allows it.

Fastener count is not a place to save time. DECRA’s 120 mph wind warranty assumes the panels went on as specified, so we fasten to the schedule on every course.

Shake XD or another DECRA profile?

Pick DECRA Shake if you want a cleaner sawn look and the vented air space a batten system creates. Pick DECRA Shingle XD if the street is lined with architectural asphalt rather than wood. It shares Shake XD’s direct-to-deck method but needs a 4:12 slope.

Common questions about Shake XD

What is the difference between DECRA Shake and DECRA Shake XD?

Shake XD copies thick hand-split cedar with deep butt edges and fastens directly to the deck. DECRA Shake has a crisper sawn texture and installs on battens. Both carry the same Class 4 rating and DECRA warranty package.

Does DECRA Shake XD need battens?

No. DECRA lists Shake XD as a direct-to-deck profile in its ICC-ES report ESR-1754. Because nothing sits between panel and deck, a flat, solid deck matters more, so we fix soft or uneven areas before the underlayment goes down.

What colors does DECRA Shake XD come in?

We show four: Chestnut, Woodland Green, Midnight Eclipse and Pinnacle Grey. Made-to-order colors add production time. Before booking your install, we confirm which colors are current and how long yours will take.

How much does a Shake XD roof weigh?

DECRA lists Shake XD at about 150 pounds per 100 square feet installed, roughly 1.5 pounds per square foot. That is light for a roof covering and far lighter than clay or concrete tile.

Is DECRA Shake XD a good roof for hail?

DECRA rates Shake XD UL 2218 Class 4, and the deep texture helps disguise minor marks. Extreme hail can still dimple the steel or strip some granules. Many carriers offer a Class 4 credit, but each sets its own amount, so check with your agent.
