What makes DECRA Shake different?

DECRA Shake is the batten-mounted shake in DECRA’s lineup. Its sibling, DECRA Shake XD, swaps in thicker butt edges and skips the battens. Shake keeps a crisper, more even cedar texture and rides on a grid of battens.
That batten grid is the real difference. It lifts each panel off the deck and leaves a ventilated air space underneath. It can also help even out minor dips in an older deck.
Real cedar grays, cups and splits under the Texas sun. Here the color lives in ceramic-coated stone granules, so the shake look holds without sealing or replacing boards.

We show six colors for this profile. Some are made to order, so production can take longer than usual. We confirm the lead time for your color before we schedule the crew.

Choose from a real panel, not a screen. Granule blends shift with sunlight, and DECRA itself advises picking from an actual product sample. Browse every finish we carry on our metal roof color chart.
Is a stone-coated shake roof a good fit for a DFW home?
It suits DFW homeowners who want wood character with steel’s storm resistance. The look sits well on brick ranches, craftsman bungalows and stone-and-timber designs.
- Hail: DECRA lists Shake at UL 2218 Class 4. That rating can qualify for a carrier’s impact-resistance credit, though each insurer sets its own terms. Our Class 4 metal roofing page explains how credits work.
- HOAs: if your HOA expects a wood-shake roofline, a shake-look steel panel is a natural candidate under Texas Property Code 202.011, which protects impact-resistant shingles that resemble the neighborhood.
- Heat: the batten space lets air move between panel and deck. During long 100-degree stretches, that gap can reduce the heat carried into the attic.
- Weight: at about 1.5 pounds per square foot installed, the roof adds little load to framing built for shingles.
How does PMRS install a batten shake roof?
We hang these panels on battens, following DECRA’s instructions and the ESR-2901 code report it cites. A typical re-roof runs in this order.
- Tear off the old roof and replace any soft or damaged decking.
- Roll out high-temperature underlayment over the whole deck, and seal valleys and pipe penetrations with self-adhered membrane.
- Fasten battens across the slope at the panel exposure, about 12-5/8 inches on center for Shake.
- Hang panels from the eave upward, locking each course over the one below and fastening per DECRA’s schedule.
- Finish ridges, hips and rakes with DECRA’s stone-coated trim. We bend valley, sidewall and chimney flashings in our own shop where DECRA’s details allow.
Builders and architects can request DECRA’s specification sheet and a project submittal with the estimate. Homeowners get the same paperwork for the HOA and insurance file.
Shake, Shake XD or a painted shake?
Choose standard Shake for a crisp cedar look and a ventilated batten install. Choose DECRA Shake XD for a deeper hand-split shadow line on a direct-to-deck install that sits lower at the eaves.
Prefer a painted steel shake with no granules? Compare EDCO ArrowLine Shake and the rest of our metal shingles and shakes. Our stone-coated steel roofing overview lines up all five DECRA profiles in one table.
This profile is quoted per project, since battens, trim count and color affect the total. Our metal roof cost guide covers the other line items.
Questions about stone-coated shake
Does DECRA Shake need battens?
Yes. DECRA lists Shake as a batten-installed profile under its ICC-ES report ESR-2901. If you want a shake look fastened straight to the deck, DECRA Shake XD is the direct-to-deck option.
What colors does DECRA Shake come in?
We show six: Woodland Green, Weathered Timber, Shadowood, Granite Grey, Chestnut and Charcoal. Some are made to order and take longer to produce. DECRA updates its palette from time to time, so we confirm the current list when we quote.
Is a stone-coated shake roof rated for hail?
DECRA lists Shake at UL 2218 Class 4, the top class in that impact test. Very large hail can still leave marks, and many policies exclude cosmetic damage. Read your policy and ask your carrier how it treats a Class 4 roof.
How much does a DECRA Shake roof cost?
We quote it per project after measuring the roof and checking the deck. Battens, trim count and color lead time all affect the price. Our metal roof cost guide explains the other line items.
Can stone-coated steel shake replace a real cedar roof?
Usually, yes. Cedar shakes often sit on spaced boards rather than a solid deck. In that case we add solid sheathing first, because the approvals DECRA cites are based on a solid plywood deck. Then the battens and panels go on.
