What makes Villa Tile different from DECRA Tile?

Villa Tile is the high-profile barrel in DECRA’s range. DECRA Tile stays low and wavy; Villa stands tall, with deep troughs between rounded crowns.

  • Shape: semi-cylindrical barrels that cast strong shadows, like hand-laid clay.
  • Attachment: direct to deck, while DECRA Tile needs battens.
  • Panel count: smaller panels at 17 by 44-1/4 inches, so about 25 per square instead of 20.
  • Weight: about 160 pounds per 100 square feet, the heaviest DECRA profile and still light for a tile look.

Barrels create bands of light and shadow, so a blended color reads differently on the roof than on a swatch. View a sample outdoors, and see the rest of our finishes on the color chart.

Is Villa Tile right for a Mediterranean-style DFW home?

Yes, if the house was designed around a barrel roof. Stucco walls, arched openings and terracotta accents can look out of place under a flat roof profile.

Clay barrels are beautiful but brittle. Hail, falling limbs and foot traffic can crack them, and Texas sees more major hail events than any other state, per NICB and Verisk. Villa Tile carries DECRA’s UL 2218 Class 4 rating; see our Class 4 roofing page for the insurance side.

Color matters in DFW heat. Lighter sand and gold tones generally reflect more sun than dark ones. DECRA tests its finishes for solar reflectance, so ask us for the numbers before you decide.

For HOAs, Texas Property Code 202.011 is written around shingles, so a barrel-tile change leans on committee approval. We help assemble the specifications and samples the committee will want.

How do we install Villa Tile direct to deck?

Villa Tile goes on under DECRA’s direct-to-deck instructions and ICC-ES report ESR-1754. The barrel shape adds detail work at every edge.

  1. Tear off the old covering, including heavy clay or concrete tile, and repair the sheathing.
  2. Install a high-temperature underlayment, then seal valleys, eaves and every vent or pipe with self-adhered membrane.
  3. Fasten each Villa panel to the deck, course by course, on DECRA’s fastening schedule.
  4. Close the open barrel ends at eaves and ridges with closures made for the profile.
  5. Cap hips and ridges with DECRA’s barrel trim, and add sidewall and chimney flashings bent in our shop where DECRA permits.

Rounded panels meet hips and valleys at awkward angles. Careful cutting and flashing there separates a clean Villa roof from a patched-looking one.

Villa Tile or another tile profile?

If a quieter roofline suits the house, DECRA Tile offers a low, rolling profile on battens and a wider palette. For a painted aluminum Spanish-tile look, compare Grandetile from Classic Metal Roofing Systems.

Our stone-coated steel roofing page puts all five DECRA profiles in one table. Villa Tile is quoted per project, and our metal roof cost guide lists what moves the price.

Villa Tile questions answered

What is DECRA Villa Tile?

It is a stone-coated steel panel pressed into a tall, rounded barrel shape that imitates old-world clay tile. DECRA rates it UL 2218 Class 4 and fastens it directly to the roof deck. It is the barrel-tile option in DECRA’s lineup.

Does DECRA Villa Tile install on battens?

No. DECRA lists Villa Tile as a direct-to-deck profile in ICC-ES report ESR-1754. That is unusual for a tile look and keeps the roof closer to its original height. The low-profile DECRA Tile is the batten-mounted alternative.

What colors does DECRA Villa Tile come in?

We show eight: Amalfi Sand, Woodland Green, Charcoal, Tuscan Sun, Venetian Gold, Rustico Clay, Pompeii Ash and Capri Clay. Some are made to order and need longer production. We confirm current availability when we quote.

How much does DECRA Villa Tile weigh compared with clay tile?

DECRA lists Villa Tile at about 160 pounds per 100 square feet installed, about 1.6 pounds per square foot. Clay and concrete barrel tile weigh several times that, so switching usually takes load off the framing.

Does Villa Tile cost more than DECRA Tile?

It can price higher, though we quote both per project. Villa uses about 25 panels per square against 20 for DECRA Tile, and its barrel ridges and hips need more trim pieces. Battens on DECRA Tile offset part of the gap, so ask us for both numbers.
