What is a metal shingle roof?
A metal shingle roof is made of interlocking steel or aluminum panels formed to look like a traditional roof covering. Each panel locks to its neighbors on all four sides. Clips or nails hide under the next course, so no fastener shows. From the street it reads as shake, slate or tile. Up close it is a coated metal skin that sheds rain, hail and embers.
That is the main difference from standing seam metal roofing, which shows long vertical ribs and a modern line. Metal shingles hide the metal instead. They suit traditional homes and neighborhoods where the deed restrictions expect a shingle or shake look.
Choosing one comes down to four questions. Which look does the house call for? Steel or aluminum? How much does a Class 4 label matter to your insurance? And what does the budget allow? The cards, table and sections below answer each one in turn.
Which shingle and shake systems does PMRS install?
We install seven systems. Two are EDCO steel shakes. Five are aluminum profiles from Classic Metal Roofing Systems in shake, shingle, slate and tile styles.

ArrowLine Shake (EDCO steel)
A galvanized steel shake with a hand-split cedar profile in solid colors or two-tone blends. EDCO rates it UL 2218 Class 4 for impact.

Generations HD (EDCO steel)
The same EDCO steel shake panel finished with high-definition wood-grain imaging. It is the most lifelike cedar color we offer on steel.

Country Manor Shake (aluminum)
A 48-inch aluminum panel carrying eight random-width shakes over a built-in air space. Light enough for many re-roofs.

Oxford Shingle (aluminum)
A flat 60-inch aluminum panel with a crisp shingle-and-slate line. At about 40 pounds per square it is the lightest system we install.

Rustic Shingle (aluminum)
Classic’s original hand-split aluminum shingle, made since 1980. Its 24-inch panels handle dormers and small roof planes neatly.

Slate Rock Oxford (aluminum)
The Oxford panel with Classic’s Slate Rock finish, a printed blend of tones that copies the color shifts of quarried slate.

Grandetile (aluminum)
A heavier 0.032-inch aluminum panel shaped like clay barrel tile, made for Spanish and Mediterranean homes.
How do the seven metal shingle systems compare?
EDCO’s steel shakes lead on a stated Class 4 rating and on price. Classic’s aluminum profiles lead on low weight, rust resistance and range of looks. Grandetile is the specialist for tile-roof homes.
| System | Material | Look | Impact rating, as the maker states it | Weight per 100 sq ft | Relative cost (these seven) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ArrowLine Shake | 28-gauge G90 galvanized steel, PVDF finish | Hand-split cedar shake, solid or blended color | UL 2218 Class 4 (EDCO) | About 74 lb | $$ | Shake look with Class 4 paperwork at a moderate price |
| Generations HD | 28-gauge G90 galvanized steel, PVDF finish | Weathered cedar with printed wood grain | UL 2218 Class 4 (EDCO) | About 74 lb | $$ to $$$ | Replacing real cedar where realism matters |
| Country Manor Shake | 0.019-inch aluminum, PVDF finish | Random-width cedar shakes, eight per panel | UL impact report, file R5100 (Classic) | About 46 lb | $$$ | Rustic shake look on a light, rust-free roof |
| Oxford Shingle | 0.024-inch aluminum, PVDF finish | Flat architectural shingle or slate | UL impact report, file R5100 (Classic) | About 40 lb | $$$ | Clean lines, re-roofs, solid-color slate look |
| Rustic Shingle | Aluminum, 0.019-inch per its Texas evaluation | Deeply formed hand-split shingle | UL impact report, file R5100 (Classic) | About 42 lb | $$$ | Complex roofs, dormers, historic styles |
| Slate Rock Oxford | 0.024-inch aluminum, patterned PVDF finish | Multi-hued natural slate | UL impact report, file R5100 (Classic) | About 40 lb | $$$ to $$$$ | A slate roof without slate weight |
| Grandetile | 0.032-inch aluminum, PVDF finish | Clay barrel tile | UL impact report, file R5100 (Classic) | About 67 lb | $$$ to $$$$ | Spanish, Mediterranean and Tuscan homes |
Weights are the manufacturers’ published figures. EDCO’s is worked out from its 37-pound box that covers 50 square feet. Cost tiers rank these seven against each other only. National cost guides typically put steel shingles below aluminum as of 2026. Your price depends on roof size, pitch, tear-off and detail work.
Steel or aluminum: which metal suits a DFW roof?
Choose steel when a stated Class 4 rating and a lower price matter most. Choose aluminum when you want the lightest roof, no chance of rust, or a slate or tile look.
EDCO steel shakes
EDCO’s literature lists ArrowLine and Generations HD as 28-gauge steel with a G90 zinc coating under a PVDF topcoat. The deep shake embossing stiffens the thin sheet. EDCO rates both UL 2218 Class 4. Both carry what EDCO calls a lifetime, non-prorated limited warranty, and EDCO describes it as covering material and labor.
Classic Metal Roofing Systems aluminum
Classic forms its five profiles from 3105-series aluminum between 0.019 and 0.032 inch thick. Aluminum cannot rust, even at cut edges. Most of Classic’s metal is recycled content. The panels weigh about 40 to 67 pounds per square. Classic lists UL fire and impact reports under file R5100 and a transferable lifetime limited warranty.
If a Class 4 insurance credit drives your choice, ask us for the UL 2218 paperwork on the exact profile before you order. We show you what the manufacturer has on file, so there are no surprises at claim time.
How do metal shingles hold up to DFW hail, heat, wind and HOAs?
They hold up well when the system is chosen and installed for local conditions. North Texas weather is hard on roofs, and the numbers show why.
11 years
Texas has ranked first for major hail events, per NICB and Verisk.
About 20
Days at or above 100 F in an average DFW year.
5-35%
Reported range of Class 4 credits on the wind and hail premium. Each carrier sets its own.
Hail and insurance
UL 2218 Class 4 is the top impact class. To earn it, a covering takes a 2-inch steel ball dropped from 20 feet without cracking or splitting. The Texas Department of Insurance leaves the size of the credit to each carrier. Many policies also exclude cosmetic hail dents on metal. A deep shake texture or patterned finish hides small dents better than a flat panel. Our Class 4 metal roofing guide covers the paperwork.
Heat and energy
Every system here uses a PVDF finish with reflective pigments, so it holds color and sheds more heat than dark asphalt. Classic’s shake panels also trap an air pocket above the deck that slows heat moving into the attic. Under every roof we lay high-temperature underlayment, because metal on a July afternoon runs hotter than ordinary felt is made for.
Wind
Four-way interlocks and concealed fasteners leave no loose edge for wind to catch. EDCO publishes uplift results from UL testing. Classic warrants its shake and shingle profiles to 120 mph. For scale, the May 2024 storm here brought gusts near 80 mph.
HOA approval
Texas Property Code 202.011 limits an HOA’s power to block wind- and hail-resistant shingles. The product must resemble what the subdivision allows, last longer and match nearby homes. A cedar-look shake or slate-look shingle usually clears that bar more easily than standing seam. We prepare samples and spec sheets for your review committee. This is general information, not legal advice.
Roof pitch
Classic’s profiles need a slope of at least 3:12. EDCO recommends 4:12 or steeper for its shakes. Most pitched DFW roofs clear both easily. Flatter porch and patio roofs tie in with standing seam in a coordinating color.

What does PMRS do differently on a metal shingle job?
We manufacture metal roofing as well as install it. The custom flashing and trim on your roof come out of our own shop, bent on computerized equipment so every piece is consistent.
- We inspect the deck before choosing between a tear-off and a re-cover, and the estimate says which and why.
- We use each maker’s starter, hip, ridge, valley and gable pieces, and we fabricate chimney, wall and cricket flashing to fit.
- We keep metals compatible: aluminum flashing on aluminum roofs, coated steel on steel roofs, and no copper runoff onto either.
- We lay high-temperature self-adhered membrane, such as PMRS HD PRO HT from our roofing accessories line, at eaves, valleys and penetrations.
- We record product labels and installation details for your insurer’s impact-resistance paperwork.
See our installation process for the full sequence. Manufacturer and workmanship terms are on our warranties page.
When is stone-coated steel or standing seam the better call?
Pick stone-coated steel when you want a granule surface that looks most like a dimensional shingle or tile. DECRA profiles bond stone chips to steel, which also masks hail marks. Compare them on our stone-coated steel roofing page.
Pick standing seam for low slopes, long simple runs and clamp-on solar mounts. We roll-form those panels in-house to the length of each roof run. Whatever you choose, our metal roof color chart shows how shade affects heat and HOA review.
How much does a metal shingle roof cost in DFW?
We price metal shingle roofs per job after measuring. Profile, material, pitch, tear-off and the count of valleys, walls and chimneys drive the total. For a benchmark, our installed price for 24-gauge Kynar 500 standing seam on a house is $15 per square foot of roof. The metal roof cost guide has the calculator and every line item.
Metal shingle roofing questions
Are metal shingles a good choice for hail in Dallas?
For most homes, yes. EDCO rates its ArrowLine and Generations HD steel shakes UL 2218 Class 4, the top impact class. Classic Metal Roofing Systems publishes UL impact reports for its aluminum profiles. Very large hail can still dent any metal, so check your policy for a cosmetic damage exclusion before you choose.
Can metal shingles go over my existing asphalt roof?
Often, yes. Classic designs its light aluminum panels to go over an existing roof in many cases. We decide only after inspecting the deck. Soft decking, two layers or hail-bruised shingles mean a tear-off, and your city’s code has the final word.
Do Texas HOAs have to allow metal shingles?
Texas Property Code 202.011 limits how an HOA can restrict wind- and hail-resistant shingles that resemble the look the neighborhood allows. Shake and slate-look metal shingles usually fit that test. We supply samples and spec sheets for the architectural review. This is general information, not legal advice.
Which is lighter, steel or aluminum metal shingles?
Aluminum. Classic’s Oxford Shingle weighs about 40 pounds per 100 square feet. EDCO’s steel shakes come to roughly 74 pounds per 100 square feet, based on its box weights. Both are far lighter than slate, clay tile or concrete tile.
Will a metal shingle roof make my house hotter or noisier?
No. The PVDF finishes on these systems carry reflective pigments that shed solar heat, and Classic’s shake panels add an air space above the deck. Installed over solid decking and underlayment, metal shingles sound much like any other roof in a rainstorm.
What warranty comes with a metal shingle roof?
The panel warranty comes from the manufacturer. EDCO’s lifetime, non-prorated limited warranty extends to material and labor, by EDCO’s own description. Classic offers a transferable lifetime limited warranty against peeling, chalking, cracking and fading. Ask us about workmanship coverage on your own job.
How long does a metal shingle installation take?
A typical single-family home in DFW takes several working days once materials arrive. Steep pitches, many valleys, a full tear-off or a custom color add time. Your written estimate lists the expected schedule.
